Tanoak

Call 503.239.9663 for current pricing and inventory

Tanoak is an evergreen hardwood with rustic characteristics and grain patterns resembling oak and chestnut. This beautiful native hardwood has hues of warm honey, reddish browns, and chocolate. Historically used for leather tanning by early settlers, it is now salvaged from the forest waste stream for making furniture, flooring, butcher block countertops and other useful products.

PLACE
Tanoak (Notholithocarpus densiflorus) grows in a narrow zone in the Siskiyou and Coast Ranges of Southern Oregon and Northern California. Sometimes referred to as a California Chestnut or Tanbark-oak, it secretes tannins historically used in the leather tanning process.  It produces acorns, which are vital to wildlife,  but is not a true oak.

PURPOSE
Salvaged from the forest harvesting waste stream and chip yards, Tanoak is often discarded during logging, and has been considered a weed tree. Tanoak is a hard, heavy wood that in many ways resembles the true oaks, but is actually a member of the beech family.  Its hardness and durability make it ideal for flooring, stair treads,  butcher block, furniture and more.

PEOPLE
We work with a small mill in Southern Oregon to salvage the logs, process, cut and carefully dry our tanoak lumber.  Regional fabrication shops turn this beautiful lumber into a number of  the useful products we offer, creating a variety of jobs in our local communities.
