Sustainable Northwest Wood is honored to be part of the project team to receive an FSC Leadership Award and recognized for our contributions to the new main terminal in progress at Portland International Airport, along with Port of Portland, ZGF Architects and Timberlab.
“It’s so inspiring to see this high level of commitment across such a diverse set of people and organizations,” said Derik Frederiksen, President of FSC US. “These award winners give us hope in the face of big challenges like climate change and show that it’s possible to promote resilient forests even as we all use forest products every day.”
Early in the project, Port of Portland asked if all the wood in ZGF's awe-inspiring design could be sourced locally and responsibly, and traceable back to the forest of origin -- a first for a project of this scale. Our President and Founder Ryan Temple was unflinching in his confidence that this was an obtainable goal. He helped procure the materials and connect to local forest owners and mills to supply 600,000 board feet of beautiful FSC Certified Douglas Fir for the lattice, partnering with a diverse array of local landowners and Pacific Northwest tribes.
We are honored to be recognized for our deep commitment to responsible wood sourcing and to be part of this historic project -- though recognition is not why we do this work.
Congratulations to our peers, team partners, the architects, designers, engineers, forest owners, loggers, mill operators, fabrication shops, truck drivers, and construction crews who have helped bring this project to life. It's a project everyone in the Pacific Northwest can be proud of.
