Sustainable Northwest Wood's Restoration Juniper is sourced from grassland restoration projects in Eastern Oregon.

Juniper is a native species found throughout Eastern Oregon.  While juniper contributes to a scenic landscape, years of wildfire suppression have allowed it to take over what was formerly a high desert grassland ecosystem.  Its out-of-control population growth and thirst for limited water supplies lead to erosion and a loss of biodiversity.

As a result, many acres of juniper are now being cut as part of a program to restore the grassland ecosystem.  Sustainable Northwest Wood's Restoration Juniper is sourced from this program as we work to develop markets for this beautiful, durable, and useful wood while supporting the sawmills in rural communities.

Juniper is characterized by its beautiful grain and warm cream and reddish tones.  It performs exceptionally well outside (50+ years of rot resistance in ground-contact applications) and will last longer outdoors than any other Pacific Northwest native species, including cedar and redwood. It is also a beautiful choice for furniture and interior finishes.

Juniper has several properties that make it unique and interesting to work with. It is prone to movement and bowing, as many woodworkers know, but it is also remarkably elastic: Bent boards can often be flexed back into straight lines (this is not possible with the hardwoods most of us know -- imagine trying to bend a dry piece of oak with your bare hands!). It also holds nails, screws, and staples better than fir or cedar, and yet often needs more than just wood glue along its edge to hold it in place.

We stock a large selection of juniper landscape timbers, kiln-dried 2" x 6" decking boards, and live-edge slabs in varying sizes and with exceptional, unique grain patterns.  We also offer custom live-edge and rustic mantel pieces and other decorative specialties.
