A distinctive feature of Pacific Northwest homes, Doug fir was the building material of choice for homes built in our region in the late 1800's and early 1900's, used for framing, flooring, and other applications both interior and exterior.
Doug fir is still very commonly used for framing and is a popular choice for flooring, cabinetry, and butcher block surfaces. While it has the reputation of being a relatively soft wood, with the right care and maintenance Doug fir can last generations, as shown by Portland’s bevy of century-old homes.
Clear vertical grain was for many years the grade of choice, yielded from massive old trees. While CVG Doug fir is still available, because so many of the big trees are gone other grades are now more common. We encourage our customers to consider additional high grades of Doug fir for many of their applications to ensure that all of the wood is being used and to create continued demand for smaller trees of quality.
Our FSC-certified Doug fir is sourced from forests in Washington State and Oregon.
In addition to a large selection of dimensional lumber, we stock 1” x 4” and 1” x 6” paneling and trim in both Clear and Tight Knot grades. We also oversee the milling and stock the traditional 3 1/2" face width flooring, perfect for historic renovations. Please contact us about custom-milling additional sizes for your unique project.
